They are the most important part of any workout or diet routine and something that a lot of people take for granted. So, to start 2018 off right, here are some tips about goal setting for weight loss and muscle building. Whether you are already on your way to your perfect body or you’re just starting out, the tips below can help you set yourself goals that will get you to the next level.
Goal Setting Tips For Exercising & Dieting
Make Goals And Stick To Them
Goals are easy to set, but difficult to stick to, but sticking to your goals is the only way to ensure a brand new you in 2018. Your goals shouldn’t seem impossible to you, as this can have the opposite effect that you are trying to create. Instead, your goals should be difficult enough to motivate and inspire you but not so hard that you don’t even start! For example, perhaps a first goal could be to exercise for thirty minutes five times a week. This way you are more likely to achieve this at least three times a week. And once you have got into the habit of exercising every other day, it will be much easier to then achieve this five+ times a week. By ticking off goals every week, you get a little bit of satisfaction every day and the motivation to keep going towards your goals.
Expect More From Yourself
This links back to the previous point, you can really do anything you set your mind to. Don’t put yourself down, YOU are capable of extraordinary things! But you must be firm with yourself about days you WIN and days you LOSE. Keep your goals simple, and always strive for more. And once your goals form into habits, create new ones constantly adapt your targets to your new expanding life.
Your Goals Need To Be Somewhat Flexible
If you are just starting out and don’t really know what exercises you like, how can you set yourself a long-term goal? For example, if you’ve given yourself a goal to run 10km per week, but actually prefer cycling, 10km is easy on a bike, so the goal doesn’t really mean much. By staying flexible, you will not lose motivation whilst you are figuring out what you prefer. And if you are not new to training if something out of your hands occurs, for example, you have over done it on leg day, you can be flexible and maintain positivity by training another area of the body giving your legs a few days to recover, this will not derail you either!
Break Down Long-Term Goals
One of the biggest problems for most workouts beginners is that they spend too long looking at the bigger picture. You may not see this as a problem, but long-term goals can sometimes look like a mountain when you want them to look like a molehill. Let’s say you want to lose five stone this year, that’s a hell of a lot of weight when you haven’t lost a thing yet. So, instead of making one goal, make loads. Set yourself a yearly goal, then break that down into monthly goals, break those down into weekly goals and then, finally, daily goals. And make sure you write these down with a pen and paper – there is definitely something to be said for doing this consistently throughout the year.
A daily goal of eating right and working out a bit doesn’t seem like much at all, but it will get you to your yearly goal as long as you are ticking off the days, weeks and months. Once again, this is where flexible goals become important. You may get ill, you may be extremely busy with work or the kids, try to make your monthly goals matter so that even during the busiest times, you are still well on your way to achieving your goals.
So, there are just a few ways that you can make your goals achievable in 2018. Goals are great for keeping your head above water and getting to your target weight, but without being flexible, easy and sticky, they can become your worst enemy.
